The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday that they are investigating the possibility that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed in a Gaza airstrike. According to the IDF, three terrorists were eliminated during operations in the Gaza Strip, and one of them could potentially be Sinwar. However, the identities of the individuals have yet to be confirmed.
Sinwar, who masterminded the October 7 massacre that claimed the lives of over 1,200 people and resulted in more than 250 hostages taken to Gaza, was believed to be hiding in Hamas tunnels, avoiding detection by frequently changing locations. The IDF noted that there were no signs of hostages at the site of the strike, countering reports that Sinwar was using hostages as human shields to protect himself.
Despite conflicting reports on Sinwar's movements, the IDF has confirmed his presence in the tunnels as recently as February. Israel has previously eliminated key Hamas figures, including political leader Ismail Haniyeh and military chief Mohammed Deif earlier this year.
