Oilers vs Flyers: Edmonton Moves Draisaitl to Top Line with McDavid as They Aim to Salvage Homestand

The Edmonton Oilers, despite vowing to avoid a slow start, have stumbled out of the gate with an 0-3 record, leaving fans frustrated. As the Oilers prepare to face the Philadelphia Flyers, they hope this matchup is the key to getting back on track. A major concern for Edmonton is their porous defense, which could struggle against highly-touted Flyers prospects Matvei Michkov and Jett Luchanko. Michkov, drafted 7th overall in 2023, is known for his exceptional puck skills, while Luchanko, the Flyers’ 2024 13th overall pick, brings plenty of offensive firepower.

While the Flyers have stacked up offensive talent, their goaltending remains a question mark with Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov sharing net duties. Both are inexperienced, with a combined 68 NHL games, and Ersson expected to start tonight. This presents an opportunity for the Oilers to capitalize, especially as their top six have only contributed two goals so far—one each from Leon Draisaitl and Jeff Skinner.

The Oilers’ offense, which led the NHL in goals just two seasons ago, has been puzzlingly quiet. Edmonton will need a stronger performance from Stuart Skinner, their projected starter, who has struggled with a 5.40 GAA and .805 save percentage over three games. Adding to the Oilers’ woes is their league-worst penalty kill, currently at 44.4%. Tuesday’s game marks the last in their four-game homestand, and Edmonton must bounce back quickly as they hit the road to face the Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars next.

With a dismal 15-3 goal differential over three games, including five goals allowed on the penalty kill, Edmonton's performance has been far from expectations. Tuesday’s matchup against the Flyers presents a crucial opportunity for the Oilers to turn their season around.
