US B-2 Bombers Strike Iran-Backed Houthi Targets in Yemen

In a major military operation, U.S. B-2 stealth bombers targeted five underground weapons storage facilities belonging to Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen, according to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The strikes, carried out Wednesday night, aimed to degrade the Houthis' ability to launch attacks against military and civilian vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The bombers targeted advanced weapons systems stored at the facilities, according to U.S. officials, marking the first time B-2 bombers were deployed against Houthi positions in Yemen. Austin described the strikes as a demonstration of the U.S.'s ability to reach even the most fortified targets, with the mission authorized by President Joe Biden.

The strikes come amid increasing tensions in the region, with Houthi forces continuing to launch attacks on U.S. and international ships in support of Iran-backed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. The U.S. military has conducted multiple operations in recent months to intercept Houthi drones and missiles.

The Houthis have been active in targeting Israel, launching missiles and drones in support of Hezbollah. While their attacks have yet to cause significant damage, both U.S. and Israeli forces have responded with strikes aimed at curbing their capabilities. Wednesday’s strike is the latest in a series of actions aimed at weakening the Houthi threat in the region.
